Other Electronic Records
The Center for Electronic Records also has custody of a large number of data
files from the 1970 Census of Population and Housing. Included are special
Public Use Sample data files for Puerto Ricans residing in the United States
(15 percent County-level Puerto Rican (descent) person and household files)
and the 1970 Public Use Sample data files for Puerto Rico (20 percent, 1/100
sample). More recently, some summary statistic files from the 1980 and 1990
Censuses of Population and Housing have been transferred to the National Archives
to ensure their long-term preservation. Included in these recent transfers
are some files for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands of the United States.
Other microdata files, transferred from the Immigration and Naturalization
Service, Statistical Reporting System, have records for lawful immigrants
(1972-1992), naturalizations (1972-1992), required departures (1974-1992),
deportations (1975-1992), and derivative citizenships (1975-1983). Each file
contains thousands, in some cases millions, of records documenting U.S. immigration.
In the case of the lawful immigrant files, these records contain the country
of origin, district of entry, and the intended place of residence, allowing
social geographers the ability to trace flows of immigrants. These records
contain personal identifiers; public use versions must be created prior to
release. Public use versions of the lawful immigrant files are available from
the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research.
In addition to the DHS, the AID has transferred to the National Archives the
Development Information System Database (DIS), 1950-April 25, 1989. It consists
of two data files; one containing information about documents related to developmental
assistance and the second containing information about projects related to
developmental assistance. The data files are part of AID’s program and
policy coordination files which act as institutional memory for field projects
funded from Washington, DC. The files include evaluation and contractor reports
that are the key materials representing AID’s experience with development.
DIS is designed to provide AID project designers with information on the development
of projects and programs, technical data related to project technologies,
and bibliographic material to be used in analyzing project oriented problems.
While the AID distributes these data on CD-ROM, the Center for Electronic
Records makes these data available on 9-track magnetic tape or 3480-class
tape cartridge.
Finally, from the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Center for Electronic Records
at the National Archives has an Extract Containing Fiche Number and Document
Summary of the Index to the Fiche of the Captured Grenada Documents, October
1983 (text file). The units of observation are captured Grenadian documents,
which are available on microfiche from the National Archives. There is one
record for each document captured in Grenada by the combined forces of the
United States and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States in October
1983. Each record contains the date of the information, the date of the document,
and the date the information was entered into the system. Each document is
described by 200 characters of free text. There is space for 21 keywords in
each record and each record contains a fiche sheet designator.
